Members, Music & Joining

Dolce members are a wide mix of people from all walks of life. Fundamentally a community choir, local people make up a large percentage of the membership. However, we have a growing number of people who travel from north and south county Dublin each week for practice.

We also have an international community within Dolce with past or present members from: Scotland, Wales, England, Germany, France, Japan, Lithuania, Latvia, Spain, Iceland, Norway, Poland, New Zealand, as well as the four provinces of Ireland.

The age of Dolce members ranges from mid-20s to 70s with the majority of singers aged between 30 and 50.

What unites us within the Dolce community is a love for music, a willingness to commit to the Dolce team and a sense of fun and friendliness.

The audition gives the musical director a chance to hear your voice, see what your vocal range is, and get to know you a bit better. You will be asked to sing one prepared song of your own choice (unaccompanied), then to sing some scales (to establish vocal range), to do some simple rhythmic sightreading , and finally you will be asked to do some simple eartests. After the auditions you will be contacted and told whether or not there is a place for you.

Please remember that only professional choirs are made up of professional singers – we are looking for people who can sing in tune (as shown by your prepared song) and who can hold one line while others around them sing other lines (as indicated by the singing of notes played on the piano). If you have a strong enough voice to sing solo that’s wonderful – and you may have opportunities to perform solo with Dolce. If you like singing but would not like to stand out from the crowd, then you have chosen the perfect place to sing – in the middle of a choir!

Auditions are often competitive, meaning there are more people applying to join than places available, particularly in soprano and alto lines. This often means that the ability to sightread music is advantageous, and we sometimes sightsing new songs during rehearsals.
